Farm Stocking or Wild Release of Quail
Quail can be released on your property for hunting or restocking as wild birds.
Do NOT release quail on public land or Parks and Wildlife land.
Quail should not be moved across state lines unless it is allowed in that State. Check with the State Wildlife Management agent in that State.
Predators and habitat are the two main factors to consider when releasing quail for restocking as wild birds. Hawks, falcons, house cats, bobcats, coyotes, skunks and raccoon can all prey on Quail. Bobwhite Quail are ground birds that seldom roost and spend their days eating insects and seeds while walking on the ground.
The ideal habitat is waist high brush or dense field edges with thick cover.
Good cover prevents hawk predation. Dense cover also thwarts ground predators like feral cats, bob cats and coyotes.
Water is not critical to adult quail as the absorb water from the food they eat.
Fire Ants are not a great threat to quail as the birds love to eat them. Any area that is covered with ant mounds would not be good habitat for quail anyway.
Quail need coveys of more than 10 birds to survive as multiple birds constantly watch for predators all day and night.
Winter survival rates for released birds can be as low as 20%.
Cover Habitat is the critical variable that determines survival year round.
For quail to survive in their covey quantities, try releasing 125 birds or more at a time to maximize their chances.
